The scammers reportedly used deep-fake ads featuring national figures to lure victims into investing in fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes. After stealing the funds, they contacted victims twice more, posing as investment managers and officials offering to recover the money for a fee.

As part of the aforementioned arrests, the Spanish police seized phones, computers, and fake documents during a raid on the syndicate’s leader. Several other individuals linked to the plot have been identified internationally.
